Maintenance of the M40 Motorway and the A404 Marlow Bypass, including the Handy Cross junction, is the responsibility of the Highways Agency.

The proposed scheme for segregating local and long distance traffic movements involves the construction of

  • A five lane link road through the roundabout
  • A new dedicated left turn slip between A404 Marlow Bypass and M40 westbound
  • Additional lanes to the M40 slip roads entering the roundabout.
  • An additional lane between A404 Marlow Hill and M40 eastbound

Since August 2002, when the scheme was included in the Government’s Targeted Programme of Improvements, Parsons Brinckerhoff, on behalf of the Highways Agency, developed illustrative designs and tender documents for the scheme. Suitable civil engineering contractors were invited to submit tenders for the detailed design and construction of the project and a contract was awarded to Edmund Nuttall Ltd in June 2003. The project is planned to be complete by the summer 2006
