Exhibition visitors welcome Improvement Plans for 09/04/2003 The Highways Agency has welcomed the high level of public support for the proposed improvements of the M40 Junction 4 /A404 at Handy Cross, near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, indicated by a survey of visitors to the public exhibitions held in November 2002. Of the 122 responses to a questionnaire handed out at the three-day exhibition, a total of 91 (or 87.5%) were supportive of the improvement scheme. The exhibition, held jointly by the Highways Agency, Buckinghamshire County Council and Wycombe District Council, presented a number of transport proposals aimed at reducing traffic and encouraging the use of public transport in the Handy Cross and Cressex areas of High Wycombe. The event was well attended by road users, local residents and businesses. Leaflets outlining the various proposals and a questionnaire were issued during the exhibition and the public were invited to send their comments to Buckinghamshire County Council. Highways Agency Project Sponsor, Phil Barnett said: The Highways Agency welcomes the high level of public support for the proposed M40 Junction 4 /A404 Handy Cross Improvements indicated by this survey. People have responded very favourably to these proposals and we are very pleased to receive this level of public endorsement. We will continue to work in partnership with the County and District Councils to ensure the scheme is delivered in a timely manner in order to minimise any inconvenience to drivers using this junction. The next stage is to appoint a contractor for the project and we hope to do this by the summer. Notes to Editors 1. The Highways Agency, Buckinghamshire County Council and Wycombe District council held a public exhibition during the last week of November 2002 at the Hilltop Community Centre, Crest Road, in High Wycombe. Proposals for reducing congestion at the M40/A404 junction at Handy Cross were exhibited by the Highways Agency and their consultant Parsons Brinckerhoff, while the County Council, in conjunction with Wycombe District Council exhibited the following local schemes: (i) New Cressex link road North from John Hall Way to Cressex Road (ii) Signalisation of the Lancaster Road/Desborough Avenue junction (iii) Signalisation of the Marlow Hill/Marlow Road junction (iv) Bus shuttle to Cressex (v) Safer Routes to Schools initiative. 2. The Government 1998 White Paper, A New Deal for Trunk Roads in England announced that an integrated Transport Study would look at ways of reducing congestion at Handy Cross. Proposals to reduce congestion at Handy Cross came out of the Integrated Transport Study 2001, which was preceded by an extensive public consultation. The Study initially recommended improvements to the size and shape of the roundabout, signing on the junction approaches, carriageway markings, and renewal of traffic signals. Traffic sign software and CCTV was also updated. Traffic reduction measures, safe routes to schools and proposals to segregate long-distance and local traffic in the longer-term were also recommended. 3. Highways Agency is an Executive Agency of the Department for Transport, which manages, maintains and improves the network of trunk roads and motorways in England on behalf of the Secretary of State. It works closely with other transport operators and with local authorities to integrate the trunk road network with the rest of Englands roads and other forms of transport.
