Introduction to the Handy Cross Integrated Transport Study |

In July 1998, the Government published the White Paper “A New Deal for Transport: Better for Everyone”. This document, along with the review of the strategic road programme outlined in “A New Deal for Trunk Roads in England”, also published in July 1998, represents a change in the way that transport is planned and provided for. “A New Deal for Trunk Roads” made reference to the problems at Handy Cross and refers to “a study to consider congestion at Handy Cross and possible multi modal solutions”. The location of Handy Cross junction is shown in Figure 1 (right). The consultants’ package of measures has been combined into six main themes. These are:
Key issues raised at consultation have been further investigated. This report presents the study objectives, the findings of the study undertaken by the consultants, the issues raised through the consultation process and further evaluation of the junction as a result of input from the consultation. The next stage will involve the detailed design of specific elements. |
